Mark Hallam

Mark Hallam was appointed to the Board of Directors in October 2015 having previously been active on the Education (now Learning & Development) Committee. Mark has 32 years of experience in the re/insurance industry, initially underwriting in Lloyds followed by 10 years at Equitas. He has been with Swiss Re for the past 12 years as the Managing Director responsible for the proactive management of the in-force P&C Reinsurance liabilities and assets. This includes due diligence and post close management of all Transactions, portfolio management of liabilities and outwards reinsurance, ILS management, direct claims run-off and client claims management.

“This is a great industry; there are very few industries where you get the opportunity to run your portfolio like a business. You have liabilities and limited assets and need to manage them effectively in order to make money. I fell into this industry through the difficulties in the Lloyd’s market in the late 1980s. It was a very difficult time but, looking back, it created the opportunity that has made my career what it is today.”

“I have this passion for the legacy industry which I know IRLA shares. I feel strongly that IRLA can continue to bring together our industry and, with the right opportunity, I can share some of the experiences I have had to help us take this wonderful group of companies and individuals to a new and greater success.”

Mark’s ideal day off:

“On my day off I like walking in the open countryside with my dog and no-one else around which is easy as I live in the Ashdown Forest, Henry VIII’s old hunting ground. I spend all my working life with loads of other people and I love the feeling of open space; as far as I can see there is only me, my wife and our dog”
